CFP: MLA 2019

Afro-Asian Imaginaries and New/Old Imperialisms II

A special session in collaboration with the Modern Language Association's Global South forum.

Continuing our generative inquiry from the 2018 convention on the material and aesthetic relations between African and Asian peoples in the long durée of imperialism, we invite additional talks on the political, economic, social, and aesthetic exchanges across the Indian Ocean in historical and contemporary times.

Though we’re open to a broad range of work that illuminates south-south entanglements in these spaces, following are some specific areas of interest:

  • Lesser known writers and artists
  • Local, regional languages, in addition to Europhone work
  • Commercial networks of Bollywood/Nollywood cinema
  • Eco-critical approaches
  • Forced migration, refugees
  • Security, the carceral, militarized regimes

300-word abstracts by 15 March 2018 to Sean M. Kennedy (skennedy@gradcenter.cuny.edu) and Duncan Yoon (dmyoon@nyu.edu).

*CFP sponsored by the MLA Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies Global South Forum, but please note this is a non-guaranteed session.*
